We are delighted to welcome Patricia back to The Duncairn following her maternity leave; we have missed her indeed, and she returns with this really popular art form that just grows from strength to strength here at The Duncairn.  

This lovely 4-week afternoon course of 3 hours per session is a great introduction and exploration of the world of Watercolours.  

Whether you are an absolute beginner or want to have another quick fix following previous classes, Patricia will work with you on building your skills and learning how to create beautiful paintings, using exciting techniques in a really relaxing, welcoming and creative space.

Over this 6-week course participants will learn not only basic sewing machine skills, but you will build and develop the confidence to explore the tools needed to make your own individual pieces.  It all begins with the basics; how to set up and thread your machine, progressing weekly as you learn all the skills you need to create your own projects.  This is the friendliest class in town…don’t miss it!

Throughout this course you will learn how to:

- thread a sewing machine and wind a bobbin.

- sew in a straight line and turn corners.

- make different types of seams and hem the edge of a garment.

- insert a zip.

- apply a patch pocket and more...

Never held a crochet hook before? Don’t know your chain from your trebles? Or maybe you’re a knitter wanting to crack the crochet code? This class is for you!

Absolute Beginners…. these informal classes will introduce you to the wonder of crochet. 

You will work your way through the most commonly known stitches and progress with guidance at your own pace – from holding the hook, creating a foundation chain right through to the treble stitch - and all the steps in between.

With the knowledge and confidence, you've gained practicing the basic crochet stitches, you will then work towards completing your very own colourful Granny Square. 

Once you've mastered the ever-versatile Granny Square, the options are truly endless - we think you'll be hooked!

Hooks, wool and a pattern starter kit will be supplied.

Led by Artist Leah Davis, you will study portraiture through drawing from a posed model. 

Through a series of structured exercises, you will learn about anatomy and not only of how to record a likeness, but also a sense of feeling in your subject.

Leah will guide participants through making techniques, diving into different mediums to draw with to further enhance your drawing and observational skills. This workshop will be sure to help you approach a portrait with more confidence and build skills necessary to draw from life.

Diving into an array of different mediums, this course will include working with ink, pencil, pen, charcoal, pastels as well as paint; with this diverse range of materials and new skills, you will enhance your creative range of techniques enabling you to approach drawing and painting with more confidence and understanding.

Set Dancing classes are every Tuesday evening, 7.30pm - 9pm, commencing Tuesday September 9th 2025.

Suitable for all levels including those dancing for the 1st time or those who have been dancing for a few years.  Full tuition will be given throughout and there will be plenty of experienced dancers there to help also.  At the start of each class we will go over the basic steps needed & the basic 'moves' then begin to dance set dances from all over Ireland.  

Bring loose clothing, bottled water & flat bottom shoes.

A step up from our Beginner Course, Bernie’s Improvers will work you through basic sewing patterns and the process of cutting skills.

Over the course of the 5 weeks, you will learn how to create a simple garment and gain confidence to alter your own clothes. Patterns will be provided but feel free to bring your own, ensuring it is suitable to your ability.

In week one, Bernie will talk to you about the type of fabric you need to buy for your chosen pattern, which will be needed for week 2 of the class.

Some of the topics covered will be:

- how to cut and pin fabric using a simple pattern.

- how to sew straight seams and finish them.

- how to insert a zip and finish a waistline.

- understanding a sewing pattern including their mysterious language and symbols and much more.
