FREE EVENT - EVERYONE WELCOME!

Our Super Sundays epitomize everything at The Duncairn that has worked, and their success is all about opening the arts to the community across generations, across cultures, and across the religious and social divide. Re-knitting the very fabric of the community they are well established as one of the best arts and community experiences on Belfast’s cultural calendar. They offer the opportunity to engage with high quality artists and performers over Sunday brunch, with live music, resident DJ, arts and crafts for the kids, good coffee, the resident artist’s shop just across the hall. Super Sundays are a place to meet old friends, meet with the family, bring the kids, or fly solo and see who you get talking to — they’re a fantastic opportunity to meet likeminded souls. So, please do join us on our five-year anniversary. Wake up and smell the coffee, in a good way.

Exhibition: Prison Arts Foundation

Presented by Prison Arts Foundation

The Prison Arts Foundation’s Exhibition… showcases an amazing body of multimedia work created by the men and women currently within the Northern Ireland prison system, as well as those on non-custodial community sentences. Along with showcasing the visual arts, the launch evening will be enhanced by the reading of some of the prisoner’swritings developed through the creative writing programme, with music and light refreshments being served.

Established in 1996, The Prison Arts Foundation Charity was founded to work within the Criminal Justice System to assist the rehabilitation and resettlement of (ex)offenders by engaging them in prosocial, artistic activities: music, ceramics / pottery, visual arts and creative writing, which in turn works to reduce re-offending rates and help build safer communities.

The artwork on display will be available for sale to the general public, and all proceeds will be donated to Victims Support and reinvested back into the programme managed by Prison Arts Foundation.

Lecture/Recital: Bunting Then And Now

bunting018.jpg

Presented by Dun Uladh. Free Admission.

Lecture / Recital with Conor Caldwell

Edward Bunting began his career as a music collector in 1792 at the Belfast Harpers’ Assembly in Belfast. This monumental event, in which harpers came together in an attempt to revive the ancient Gaelic music tradition, took place in Waring Street and was organised by individuals who wold later form the Society of United Irishmen. Bunting transcribed the music form this meeting and subsequently collected music from every corner of the country, the first large-scale traditional music collection known in Europe.

This illustrated talk highlights examples from the Edward Bunting collection which are found in the contemporary repertoire of Irish musicians. Tunes have been reborn, recast, and remade in the time since Bunting’s publication, while a small number remain virtually untouched.

Exhibition: Four Corners

https---cdn.evbuc.com-images-53919620-240342103828-1-original.20181213-160853.jpeg

Presented by Four Corners

Artist Barbara Dass presents a corpus of work driven by wanderlust for the nooks and crannies of her beloved Belfast. The images, mainly of crosses, had their origin on Good Friday 2016 when Dass, Professor of Design at Belfast School of Art, Ulster University journeyed through the streets of Belfast city centre, meditating on Jesus’ final hours.

Over the next two years Dass walked the four corners of Belfast exploring public spaces, parks and playgrounds, wandering through alleyways and streets, and recalls that her journeys sculpted a landscape of strange artefacts in the imagination, declaring the presence of the scandalous forgiveness of Christ’s cross. The exhibition is the visual narrative of Dass’s personal passage through Belfast’s terrain, the imagining, the making, the thinking and the praying.

This exhibition is generally open on weekdays throughout the festival. However, it may be occasionally closed for space reasons, so attendees are advised to check by phoning The Duncairn, (028) 90747114.

Doors: 19:15 Show: 19:45

Following the warmly received Diablo, we are thrilled to have a return visit from Spanner in the Works —this FREE event is not to be missed. Donations gratefully accepted.

Written and directed by Patricia Downey, CUSS THE WORLD follows five teenagers whose lives are growing increasingly out of control. Meet Jane, whose brother Peter is doing time for drug-dealing and death driving; then there’s David and Douglas constantly trying to avoid their violent father. Next is Amy who may be following in her pregnant sister’s footsteps. Finally, Anne, whose current hobbies include getting drunk and selling prescription drugs. Along the way we also meet mothers who share their thoughts about bringing up troubled teenagers.

CUSS THE WORLD will resonate with anyone trying to understand or come to terms with the realities of serious issues facing this generation’s young people, and with anyone who no longer doubts that drugs are an issue that cut across class, gender, age, rural and urban communities.

To book your seat please email debbie@174trust.org or contact our booking office on reception@174trust.org - community and youth groups bookings very welcome.

There will also be a superb group of musicians from the Club including current and past tutors, led by harpers Eilis Lavelle and Emer Mallon, along with sister and brother Méabh and Tiarnán Smyth.

"Not just another young lad with an acoustic guitar, Keenan is the sound of Tim Buckley and Brendan Behan arguing over a few jars, while Kavanagh deals Dylan a suspicious hand of cards, and Anthony Cronin and Jack Kerouac furiously try to scribble it all down"
