Starting in the streets of Vienna, when a pandemic stood in the way of playing live gigs anywhere else, lead singer and songwriter Pádraig Mac Mahon had just moved from his home in Baltinglass, Ireland and met founding partner Ian Strahn while busking. Getting locked into a broken down tram with strangers gained them a drummer, keys and bassist, and The Belgian Blue was born. The tri-national band (IE, US, AT) splits their time between Vienna and Dublin.
Characterized by the different influences of the members’ background and upbringing, their music stretches from Irish Folk-Rock to Americana, thrown over experimental electronic elements. Through word of mouth and passionate performances, the band quickly gained a large underground following in Vienna, selling out their first headline concert at Arena Wien within a year as an independent band. They subsequently toured across Europe as a 5 piece. Though consisting of five core members, The Belgian Blue see themselves more as a collective that interacts with the music scene, frequently sharing stages with musician friends. The band has performed alongside artists such as Glen Hansard, Jessica Pratt, Lefty Parker and The Ocelots.
Distinguished by their raw and high-energy live performances and a strong word-of-mouth following, the band has built their career from scratch. Signing with Viennese Independent Label Ink Music in 2026, The band released their new EP "For Wards Weight" on vinyl in September 2026 and are set to record their debut album in November, in Dublin with Joe Doyle of The Frames joining them on bass, further expanding their DIY-approach and remaining close to their indie roots, while stepping into a new territory which is at once a new frontier and home stomping ground.
