No previous painting experience is required as you will be gently guided through the steps to creating the acrylic painting of the evening - "bluebells near cavehill'.

It is a really fun and relaxing night out and is open to all over 18.

The Irish harp is the iconic instrument of Ireland, it’s depicted on the national emblem, but how much
do you know about it? The Duncairn is delighted to host the Historical Harp Society of Ireland who are running a day of discovery, starting with a concert by harpist Siobhán Armstrong, and prize-winning singer, Eibhlís Ní Ríordáin. There will also be a beginners’ workshop using copies of ancient Irish harps — no musical experience is necessary but advance booking is advisable. And you can learn about the early Irish harp in a free illustrated talk given by world expert, Simon Chadwick.

These classes are designed to build the knowledge and confidence necessary for participants to complete a number of sewing projects over the course of 8 weeks. Each class  will introduce you to new skills and techniques and give you something to take home and be proud of!
Some of the projects will include: bunting, a lined tote bag, a lined make-up bag with a zip and an introduction to free motion embroidery.

This course will provide an introduction to digital photography. You will learn how to control the settings of the camera and how that affects the image. The course will explore a variety of creative composition techniques and different lighting techniques and how that can dramatically change your photographs. There will be practical exercises and you will be able to use different lighting set ups. At the end of the course you will also have the chance to get a large print of one of your photographs.

Belfast born Master Craftsman Rab Cherry has been making instruments for more than forty years and is recognized not only as one of Ireland’s greatest craftsmen but as an authority on all things to do with Irish fiddle music. Participants
will learn woodworking skills including how to use planes, scrapers, knives, chisels and gouges, as well as how to maintain and sharpen these tools, how to prepare and use traditional woodworking glue ( hide glue ), how to clamp up the various parts of the box fiddle while gluing, making some clamping blocks, etc. A basic understanding of the function and manufacture of the various parts of a box fiddle will also give an insight into the workings and manufacture of instruments of the violin family. Best of all, everyone will get to make and take away their very own instrument.

Introduction to Felt Making with Debbie Young.

11am – 1pm
Working with merino wool in its raw form, you will layer and roll multiple coloured fleece to develop your own felted creation which can then be embellished and framed to hang on your wall for all to admire. 

Dabble in Decoupage with Debbie Young

2pm to 4pm
It’s amazing what you can do with some brightly coloured papers, shiny glue and a little skill. Transform and upgrade glassware, little wooden items, picture frames… in fact most things can be be given a new lease of life with this on trend crafty activity. 
 

An introduction to sewing and textiles with Chloe Dougan. 

11am - 1pm
Chloe will demonstrate basic sewing machine skills, working with participants on the design and applique of your own hand made cushion.

2pm – 4pm
For the intermediate sewer, this session will cover a demonstration on pattern cutting, technical and sewing terminology and the construction of an easy fitting take home garment. 

Basic machines are provided, but please feel free to bring your own machine. 

Ceramics with Eimear O’Caoilte and Niamh Conlan: 

11am – 1pm
In this two-hour session you will design and create your very own ceramic wall hanging. Using slabs of clay with stencils and imprinted textures you can create unique pieces such as ceramic birds to hang, or even personalised decorative tiles. Here, there are no limits to what you can create. 

Ceramics 2 with Eimear O’Caoilte and Niamh Conlan

2pm – 4pm
This session will teach participants the skill of coil building and allow you to take away you very own hand built pot! We will also cover some decorating techniques to help achieve a truly personal and unique piece of work. 

Both sessions are aimed at beginners, everyone welcome to come get their hands dirty!!

This 8-week workshop, led by industry specialist Corrina Askin, will cover all aspects of animated filmmaking, including character design, locations, storyboarding, basic animation techniques and post production. It will cover 2D and 3D stop frame techniques and take you step by step through the process to create a short animated piece from scratch. Corrina has two children's series on air, Joe and Jack on RTÉ Jr and Castle Farm on Milkshake Channel 5, and created content for the Storytime App with Cbeebies. She is currently working with Cbeebies on a mindfulness online platform.

This will be a gentle class focusing on breath led mindful movements finishing with a nurturing guided relaxation. The class is suitable for anyone over 16 years old.

As this is a drop-in donation-based class, there is no need to book – you just turn up on the night and pay what you can afford.
